JUDITH KNIFFIN
I PAINT BECAUSE…
When I look at things, I see color, form, pattern, rhythm and repetition…and then I see objects. When you look at my paintings, you’ll see objects too; but consider the visual elements behind them. The textures, spatial relationships, rich colors, and quirky shapes are far more compelling to me than the objects they represent.
I like to begin painting in loose, structural gestures, thinking “Aha, this one is going to STAY gloriously abstract!” But then I get sucked into the incredible visual detail, and abstraction becomes…obsession? Beats me. Judge for yourself.
